NEWS from Lisa: Sowing Ceramic Seeds for Spring

The month of August found the Bakehouse Studio bursting with work! Not only with my own work-in-progress for five exhibitions coming up in October, but also the work of 11 other Bakehouse artists who chose to exhibit in this year’s Midjuburi Precinct Creative Trail. We greatly enjoyed opening the studio doors once again for this great community event organised by the Innerwest Council. Many thanks to all the participating artists for their help in organising this event and to Steffi from Kultura Trail Sydney for adding Paula (pictured below) to the Trail Treasure Hunt.

Paula was part of the Treasure Hunt at the recent Midjiburi Creative Trail

These finished boxes will be exhibited at Artisans n the Gardens, Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney.

Maquette in preparation for the full scale Gustava’s Kiss Sculpture

This month I’m very focussed on glazing and transferring my love of painting onto ceramics as you can see from this small scale maquette (pictured ) made in preparation for glazing the full scale sculpture Gustava’s Kiss for Hidden Rookwood Sculptures  2023.

I’ve also recently enjoyed painting patterns inspired by central desert landscapes, the bark of eucalyptus trees and Australian flora, onto ceramic lids using  underglazes. These little painted abstractions will be framed by Scott’s beautiful boxes made from reclaimed timbers to also serve as keepsakes for travel and other treasures. The finished boxes will be for sale at Artisans in the Gardens to help raise money for botanical research and conservation. I am very chuffed to have been included in this event for a third year, and this time in creative collaboration with Scott.

August was a also a month of studio hibernation as I worked hard to make, glaze,  assemble and prepare for the following exhibitions, all opening in October. Please save the dates. I’d love you to come and see new works to be exhibited at:

Sara Buchner

As the Les Sculptures Refusées outdoor exhibition approaches, I would like to thank Sara Buchner for her incredible assistance in rolling slabs and helping me build the human scale legs for the three large sculptures to be exhibited in this outdoor exhibition. Sara is also a delight to have around, full of ideas and good cheer.

She came to the Bakehouse through Scott and the timber trade, and runs her own Marrickville business called Among the Trees, a reclaimed timber yard. Having practiced ceramic slab-building techniques in Germany, her country of birth, you might like to take advantage of Sara’s skills in her popular Light House workshop which we are repeating this month.

Here’s to Spring – a time for growth and getting out and about again. Check out our upcoming workshops to add to your skill set or your social enjoyment.
Hope to see you at the Bakehouse again soon
