NEWS from Lisa: Creative Winter Warmers Await!

Last month I really enjoyed exhibiting Freddie in the inaugural Sculptures@Scratchley prize located at Fort Scratchley in Newcastle. This totem  even survived the freak half-hour hailstorm, water spout, strong winds and hailstones the size of golf-balls that descended upon Newcastle last Friday. Hear, hear to the strength of well-built ceramics!

Scott and I with Freddie on the last day of the Sculputures@Scratchley Exhibition in Newcastle.

This terrific event attracted over 23,000 visitors many of whom had never been to this beautiful historic site, overlooking spectacular Nobby’s Beach. I’m very glad to say that from this show, Freddie found a new home just two blocks away in the first house ever to be built on the East Newcastle headland. I also received an exciting new commission for a totem from another Novacastrian wishing to reference her Scottish heritage and landscape around Orkney.

Sketch of Gustava, the totem that will be exhibited at the HIDDEN Rookwood Sculpture Exhibtion.

I’m excited that my next Austrian-inspired totem called Gustava, based on Klimt’s painting ‘The Kiss’ has been accepted into the annual HIDDEN Rookwood Sculpture Exhibition.

Over the past few weeks I have also enjoyed working on a few smaller still life flower sculptures for the annual Bloom 2023 Exhibition of botanical and still life art, opening on Thursday June 28 at Weswal Gallery in Tamworth. The idea for my work came from looking at the interiors and still life paintings of Matisse and Georgia O’Keefe. I can’t wait to see them finished and all together.

The glazing session of the recent Totem II ‘Finding Your Form’ Workshop.

Between exhibitions and submissions, there has been more workshops including a new intermediate totem workshop Totem II Finding Your Form. This is the first of some new four hour Winter workshops that include lunch. Here’s what one participant, Paula – who came all the way from Canberra, had to say about it:

I first discovered your work through the Kerrie Lowe Gallery and loved it. And I’m thrilled that you share your knowledge and enthusiasm through workshops. It could easily become addictive. Your studio is friendly and welcoming and I felt very comfortable joining a group. Thank you.
