NEWS from Lisa: March Meanderings
Over the past month I’ve been researching and experimenting with new forms from tiny sea butterflies to large universal shapes. It’s been a joy, exploring the natural environment both literally along the shores of Sydney Harbour and digitally to the depths of the ocean. This has led to some gratuitously challenging structures.
‘Stone Hinge’.
See left, my first large totem for the year called ‘Stone Hinge’ which pays homage to British sculptor Barbara Hepworth and consists of seven generously sized, landscape-inspired beads. With many glaze tests completed at different firing temperatures to find just the right white, this work is now in the kiln and I can’t wait to see how it comes out.
This month I also continue to research and resolve the making of a kaleidoscope of sea butterflies. I have become quite infatuated with how to translate these small delicate deep sea, climate-change avenging hermaphrodites. For this project I’m experimenting with porcelain paper-clay and crystalline glazes to try and express their aragonite shells and iridescent wing-like lobes. The images below show depp sea photographs and my handbuilding work-in-progress.
These ambitious projects will continue over the next few months as I resolve final forms, play with different scales of work and nut out glaze and installation ideas.
Meanwhile, a Flower Workshop, focussing on honeysuckles and gum blossoms, and a high school art residency have also been keeping me busy. Below you can see the participants of the current Flower Workshop at the Bakehouse Studio and their work-in-progress at the bisque stage which is now in the kiln blooming into colour.

Looking for a shared woodwork shed in Sydney?
You’ve found it!
The Bakehouse Shed in Marrickville is a space for people with a woodwork project but no space. Or machines, or tools.
It's even for people with no skills and only a vague idea about what end of a hammer to hold.
Perhaps you want to fix something.
Or restore something.
Or make something from scratch.
This is a relaxed, inclusive community space where you can work on your own project with the good humoured guidance of Scott - and YouTube.
Drop in for a visit and a chat.
