NEWS from Lisa: Springing and Snorkelling into Summer

A great week spent hiking, cycling, snorkelling, swimming and scuba diving on Lord Howe Island were wonderful forms of recreation after so much clay creation this year. We just loved the sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship this island has to offer its strictly controlled number of annual visitors.

Lord Howe Island is a Unesco World Heritage Site steeped in a fascinating history, a complex climate and fortunately a very protective community of island dwellers who have successfully eradicated most introduced species and protected the many endemic plants and animals in this clever ecosystem. To swim amongst fearless tropical fish, colourful corals and walk through forests of ferns under entangled banyan trees, to a symphony of birdcalls during the Mutton bird mating season was a pure delight.

Also impressive was the local Lord Howe Island Brewery and Nursery propagating not only it’s world famous Kentia Palms, but also hydroponic vegetables including tomatoes, zucchini, mushrooms, rocket and herbs for their delicious shed-made pizzas. Only a two hour flight from Sydney it may seem pricey but knowing how your visit helps support all the wonderful local initiatives makes it an investment in happiness, well worthwhile for everyone.

Not being able to travel with clay, instead I enjoyed a spot of watercolour sketching each day to record some of the most inspiring aspects of this special landscape.

I was so excited when after a few days of not spotting the endangered Golden Whistler bird, one unexpectedly flew onto my bike tyre after I’d stopped for coffee one morning at Jim’s café.

Beach Ball exhibited recently at Les Sculptures Refusées in Manly, will also be making an appearance at the Bakehouse Christmas Sale

Continuing on with a bit of a beach theme this month, our sights are now fully focussed on the Annual Bakehouse Studio Christmas Exhibition and Sale starting this weekend. It’s been 21 years now since we moved into this old Marrickville Bakery and I’ve loved every minute of working in this incredible studio space and sharing it with so many people. At this time of year we celebrate how indispensable both creativity and creative communities have become in each of our lives. Come and see the 2023 line-up which this year includes: Sara Buchner, Lisa Godwin, Donyale Harrison, Pam Horsnell, Vicki Klay, Monika Lensce, Jim O’Brien, Sally Steele, Tracey Wigg, Deb Wilkes, Cally Winter-Bruer and of course Scott and me.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Bakehouse real soon!

Lisa
